PRESS RELEASE - NOV 2001OLD PALS CONNECTEDFormer students from the Slough Secondary, Slough Grammar, Slough High and Upton Grammar Schools now have their own dedicated website. It can be found at www.oldpaludians.org and contains a wealth of information about the Old Paludians Association and the histories of the schools. Visitors to the site can indulge in a great nostalgic trip back to their schooldays for there are over 150 photographs - the earliest being a Secondary School photograph of 1920. There are class photos, cricket teams, football teams, school choir and all the long school photos where the cheekiest lads ran from one end of the school group to the other whilst the camera was slowly panning along. Long-forgotten names suddenly spring to mind; precious memories of yesteryear come flooding back - if you were a pupil, you will almost certainly find yourself somewhere. This most comprehensive site also contains up-to-date details of forthcoming reunions and School events; it has a notice board where former pupils can search for friends whose whereabouts have become lost in the mists of time as well as details of membership and the purchase of the special book published to coincide with the Association's 85th Anniversary in year 2000. There are also links to the current School website (www.sloughgrammar.berks.sch.uk), local Slough sites and the general school pupil search site at www.friendsreunited.co.uk Ian Cairns, webmaster, went back to the Slough Grammar School recently to demonstrate the Old Paludians site to Mrs Margaret Lenton, the School Principal, and Mr Sukhdev Ajimal, the webmaster of the School's website. It has taken Ian (SGS 1964-71) many hours to establish this superb site which must surely be the best of its kind in the UK.![]() Other information:Historical Background:The School was founded in 1912 under the name of Slough Secondary School; it was sited in William Street and was co-educational. By 1936 the school had outgrown the buildings and was split into Slough Grammar School (for boys) in Lascelles Road and Slough High School (for girls). The girls could not move to their new building in Twinches Lane until 1939 and so stayed in William Street for a further 3 years. In 1982 the Twinches Lane site was sold for redevelopment and the girls moved to Lascelles Road. Slough Grammar School and Slough High School were merged, and the combined school, once again co-educational, was renamed Upton Grammar School. This School reverted to the former name Slough Grammar School in 1993, and remains co-educational. The site of the original Slough Secondary School is now the campus of the Thames Valley University.Comments made by former students:RC SGS 1949-57 from East Sussex I spent an enchanted hour and a half last night looking at the SGS pictures of 1950 and 54, wincing at the sight of me (although they much entertained the children), but then looking at faces of masters and mates I hadn't seen for all those years. The children have never seen a picture of me as a child so those school pictures fascinated them - not as much as they fascinated me, though. --- AB SGS 1936-41 from IOW I have only recently acquired a PC and although I'm now long in the tooth I'm very much a babe at using it. However I've thoroughly enjoyed the Old Paludians site which has aroused many memories that I'd long forgotten: My greatest memory: The pleasure of attending a brand new school and awe at seeing all the masters wearing gowns... I'm so pleased that my 1936 photo has helped, I don't know how I have managed to keep it for 65 years JN 1967-74 PS I enjoyed the website!! MF SHS 1953-58 from SC, USA I cannot tell you how amazing it was to find this site and bring up photographs of the students in 1954 and Class 5S in 1958. DK SHS 1971-75 Gloucester I have looked at every picture and read every word avidly, cannot believe I have found this site and that I may even get in contact with old friends .. will indeed use the membership printout - unbelievable ... I think the site is wonderful, thank and Ian for your extremely hard work in creating such a "memory lane" site! Still can't believe they actually destroyed the building, it was only one of a few with a visible "watermark" just on the wall inside the gate! We learnt that in Geography!! I first came across my sister's name in the 1936 1st Eleven Hockey team ..she told me that she had a copy of the 1934 photograph I asked if she could fill in some names, which she has very kindly done.
